The American Eagle Foundation joins millions of other voices in celebrating Earth Day today – April 22, 2016.

On Earth Day, we are reminded of a quotation made by Chief Seattle in 1855: “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

In fact, “Every day is Earth Day.” Every day is a new beginning and a new opportunity to restore, protect, appreciate, and cherish the planet on which we live – and to extend that philosophy to include all creatures, great and small, whose lives depend on the health and sustainability of our planet.

At the AEF raptor care facility at Pigeon Forge, we are celebrating new life – several baby eaglets have hatched and will join others of their kind when they are old enough to fly free.

We would remind everyone to do all they can to keep the environment safe for these young ones, whose lives are very difficult the first year. Do not use harmful pesticides, contaminants and poisons; hunting and fishing should be lead-free; lobby for safer designs for wind turbines, and encourage electric companies to implement avian-friendly alternatives to their power poles and lines.

Since 1970, the Earth Day movement has given voice to an emerging consciousness throughout the world, channeling human energy toward solving environmental issues. Forty-six years later, the Earth Day movement continues to inspire, ignite passion, and motivate people to action.

By protecting the environment for eagles and other animals, we are putting words into action, and making this a better world for all of us.

Happy Earth Day!
