Wankan Tanka and Cheyenne

Wankan Tankan

Wankan Tankan, a male Golden Eagle, has been at the American Eagle Foundation's (formerly National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles) education, breeding, and rehabilitation center in Pigeon Forge, TN since 1986. Wankan Tankan was injured when he collided with a power line in Colorado, breaking his wing. Although he is capable of flight, the wing did not heal well enough for him to be able to hunt on his own in the wild. He arrived at the AEF with a mate, Sundance, who he met while staying at a rehabilitation center in Colorado.

Wankan Tankan means "Great Spirit", which this bird is. He is the father of every Golden eaglet raised and released into the wild from the AEF facility. He and Sundance have successfully produced six youngsters since 1990. All of the young produced were released into the wild at twelve weeks of age. He is a very good parent. As with all eagles, both parents incubate the eggs and raise the young.

Unfortunately, in 1998 Wankan Tankan lost his mate, Sundance.

In the spring of 1999, we introduced him to a new eagle named Cheyenne and hopefully they will like each other enough to eventually produce young.

Cheyenne

Cheyenne is a female Golden Eagle. She was found by a game warden on the side of the interstate near Casper, Wyoming on 2/12/97. She was taken to Lois Layton, a rehabilitator in Casper, for treatment. Her left wing was fractured in several places and some bone was exposed.

She arrived at the American Eagle Foundation (formerly National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles) in Pigeon Forge, TN on 3/12/99. When given her first physical, we found that she has a single white tail feather. This is very unusual for Golden Eagles.

She was introduced to Wankan Tankan, a male Golden Eagle, who lost his mate in 1998. They seem to be getting along quite well and have even displayed some breeding behavior. Hopefully, they will mate and increase the population of Golden Eagles in the wild.
