Eagle Recovery
Both the dramatic decline and gradual recovery of the bald eagle
population of the continental United States can be traced to human
intervention and the growth of civilization. The information in this
site describes and explains the influence of man on the bald eagle
through history, beginning with the arrival of the European settlers in
1607.
Through historical records, population counts and research
studies, the U.S. government has traced the events which led to the
near demise of our national symbol. This site attempts to outline those
events, to describe the means and methods used to help restore the bald
eagle to its former health, and to detail and support experts'
recommendations for the future protection of the bald eagle and our
other valuable wildlife resources. Although not all experts are in
agreement regarding the exact steps to take to ensure the survival of
our wildlife resources, all agree that thoughtful, strategic management
of our environment is a top priority for the nation.
