Tecumseh

Tecumseh

Tecumseh is a male Golden Eagle that hatched on April 28, 1980 at the Topeka Zoo in Kansas. He was later sent to the Akron Zoo in Ohio, where he lived a relatively uneventful life in an aviary exhibit. On April 25, 1995, he was sent to the American Eagle Foundation's (formerly National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles) education, breeding, and rehabilitation center in Pigeon Forge, TN. He is now being trained to free fly for environmental education programs, adding new challenges to his life.

Raptors, or birds of prey, are larger as you go from the most southern part of their range to the most northern part. Also, females tend to be a third larger than males. Therefore, Tecumseh is a relatively small Golden Eagle. Because of his relatively small size,he is a very good candidate for handling and training to be used in educational programs. But don't let his small size fool you. Tecumseh has an unbelievable 1200-pounds-per-square-inch crushing capacity in each foot!

Tecumseh is currently being trained to free fly outside on a regular basis. Don't worry! He always comes back when he is called. Soon Tecumseh will be seen annually by thousands of school children and adults alike in the AEF's educational programs. Tecumseh's role at the AEF is essential in teaching the public to respect and care for the earth's wildlife and environment.
