"Yankee", "Twinkie",
and "Dexter" eaglets hatched by American Eagle Foundation
at Dollywood were placed in artificial nesting tower at Douglas Lake
on June 11, 2001.
WHAT: On July 24th,
three twelve-week old Golden Eaglets that were placed in an artificial
nesting tower at Douglas Lake on June 11th at six-weeks of age, will
be released into the wilds of the Great Smoky Mountains area on Douglas
Lake by the non-profit American Eagle Foundation headquarted at the
Dollywood entertainment park.
Two
of the eaglets were produced in captivity by a non-releasable pair
of Golden Eagles named "Wankan Tankan" (male) and "Cheyenne" (female) cared for by the Foundation.
The third eaglet was hatched in captivity at the Montgomery Alabama
Zoo. The eaglets have been named "Yankee" (George Steinbrenner) ,"Twinkie"
(John Netherton) and "Dexter" (Dexter Yager) by the Foundation in
honor of special supporters of the Foundation.
The three eaglets are the
first Golden Eagles ever to be released into the Great Smoky Mountains
area for repopulation purposes.
WHEN: Three Golden
Eaglets will be released into the wild from an American Eagle Foundation
operated hacking tower at Douglas Lake in Dandridge on Tuesday, July
24, 2001 at 10 a.m

Local
East Tennessee media are welcome to attend this activity to photograph
the eaglets being released into the wild. Foundation staff will
be available for interviews. Sevierville media can meet Al Cecere
at the Exxon station on the corner of Middle Creek Road and Dolly
Parton Parkway at 8:00 a.m. Knoxville area and other media can
meet Al Cecere at the M in Dandridge
located on State Road 92 at 9 a.m. All media will follow Al Cecere
to the hack tower which is located on unmarked private property.
